What makes an efficient DEI program? Why is DEI critical for your library strategy? But the journey towards achieving DEI maturity is a marathon, not a sprint.<\/p><p>The five steps below can help reveal the best practices for implementing an effective DEI program.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h5>Step 1: Establish a DEI Committee<\/h5><p>The first step is to create a committee with representatives from all library areas. This team will be responsible for planning and implementing DEI initiatives.<\/p><p>Of course, it should be diverse in terms of race, gender, age, and other demographics. The idea is to gather different perspectives for planning and implementing the DEI initiatives.<\/p><p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/11\/the-five-stages-of-dei-maturity#:~:text=The%20Model,tactical%2C%20integrated%2C%20and%20sustainable.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The DEI Maturity Model<\/a>, as introduced by Ella F. In December 2017, Clemson University\u2019s administration charged each college and the University Libraries with creating and implementing a diversity strategic plan aligned with their plan.<\/p><p>Clemson University Libraries answered this charge by creating a <strong>Libraries Diversity Plan Working Group (LDPWG)<\/strong>. They started with twelve members representing diverse units, positions, and identities.<\/p><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>Step 2: Document your current situation<\/h5><p>In this phase, you can thoroughly audit your library&#8217;s current status of diversity, equity, and inclusion.<\/p><p>This could include:<\/p><ul><li>Staff demographics<\/li><li>Representation in programming and collections<\/li><li>Accessibility to the facilities<\/li><li>Feedback from community members<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>For this assessment, the group of Clemson University Libraries created a <strong>DEI framework<\/strong> to conduct an inventory of existing initiatives. Then, the LDPWG worked for sixteen months and in that time they developped:<\/p><ul><li>An updated organization mission statement<\/li><li>A sustainable diversity statement<\/li><li>An accountability roadmap<\/li><\/ul><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>Step 3: Set SMART Goals<\/h5><p>One of the most widely employed methodologies is the SMART goals framework.<\/p><p>SMART is an acronym standing for:<\/p><p><strong>S<\/strong>pecific<br \/><strong>M<\/strong>easurable<br \/><strong>A<\/strong>chievable<br \/><strong>R<\/strong>elevant<br \/><strong>T<\/strong>ime-bound<\/p><p>A SMART goal, then, is clearly defined (<em>Specific<\/em>), can be tracked and evaluated (<em>Measurable<\/em>), is realistically attainable (<em>Achievable<\/em>), relates directly to your larger objectives (<em>Relevant<\/em>) and has a deadline for completion (<em>Time-bound<\/em>).<\/p><p>For your program, define what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean for your library and what you hope to achieve with your DEI initiatives. It lays the groundwork for real, meaningful change, moving the library closer to being a truly inclusive and equitable space for all.<\/p><p>Your SMART goals will guide your strategic planning. The DEI initiatives in these libraries can withstand stress tests such as economic challenges and leadership changes.<\/p><p>The challenge is set.
